Bette Hoyt – Management Lecturer

Bette Hoyt is a guest lecturer and instructor for Business Research Methods.  Bette has worked within the market and consumer research field for 30+ years.  Having worked within the financial, hospitality and energy sectors, she has broad experience in conducting all phases of consumer and market research.  She has been actively engaged in the design, management and implementation of segmentation, positioning, concept development, communications testing and label/logo development research studies as well as brand tracking and customer satisfaction studies.

Bette retired from ExxonMobil in September 2012 after 21 years.  During her career with ExxonMobil, Bette served in a variety of market and consumer research positions for both the Fuels Marketing and Lubricant Marketing companies – focusing not only on the US market but also on key strategic global markets such as Germany, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Russia and China.  She has contributed to ExxonMobil’s expansion into fuels markets outside the US as well as contributed to numerous strategic positioning and branding efforts for both the company’s fuels and lubricants businesses.  With the merger of Exxon and Mobil in 2000, Bette focused on market and consumer research for the Fuels Marketing Company across its global network, with particular focus on convenience store positioning and expansion as well as conversion efforts to a single fuels brand in several of the multiple brand countries where Exxon/Esso as well as Mobil marketed.  In 2006 Bette moved to ExxonMobil’s Lubricant and Specialties Marketing Company to serve in the capacity as Global Market Research Manager.  She provided research support for passenger car lubricants (primarily the Mobil 1 brand) as well as commercial vehicle and industrial lubricants.  In this capacity her core duties were to develop, manage and execute research studies for key stakeholders across a broad spectrum of strategic needs.  She actively participated in management strategy meetings and incorporating research observations and insights into action items which addressed key business needs with a specific focus on Russia and China.

Ms. Hoyt earned a bachelor degree in Mathematics from Michigan State University and a Masters of Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University.  She currently lives in Potomac, Maryland and provides volunteer services to The Kennedy Center and The Washington Animal Rescue League.  One of her key hobbies is foreign travel, and to date has visited 40+ countries.

She has one daughter, Elizabeth, a senior manager for strategy and research with Marriott International in Bethesda, Maryland.

In Her Words ...

After many years of working in the business world as a market research professional, I am enthusiastic about giving back some of my experiences to those who will be our future leaders.  I think it is vitally important for today’s business students to have not only the knowledge of market and consumer research but to see how it can be put to practical use in the ‘real world’ to help managers make informed decisions.– Bette Hoyt
